Puppy Classes

These are a great way to socialize your new pup and learn to shape his/her behaviour to meet the expectations you have for your new companion.  Your puppy should be between the ages of 7 and 17 weeks to start these classes.  At this point his/her adult teeth have not yet emerged and it is the ideal time to teach bite inhibition.  Playtime with other pups is a part of each session so that they learn manners when playing with other dogs and interacting with other people.

Each session is 6 weeks in length.  You may begin at any point because the curriculum is taught in a layered manner.  Each week 6 main topics are addressed using a variety of exercises.  There is a Puppy Manual given on the first night.  A sheet reviewing the material covered on a particular night is handed out at the end of each class.

Areas addressed include : Coming when called, walking on a leash without pulling, sitting to greet people, acceptance of handling, Tellington Touch, how to deal with puppy behaviours such as biting, house training, chewing, guarding of food or toys, chasing and overcoming fear or shyness.  The emphasis is on how puppies learn so that you will learn to teach your pup the things that matter most to you.  The methods used are positive reinforcement and management of the environment.  Classes run from 6:30 to 7:30 Tuesday nights.  This is year round with short breaks for major holidays.  If the number of puppies reaches 8 or 9 we will start a second class from 7:45 to 8:45.  You need to pre register to prevent overcrowding.  Please bring proof of your pup's immunization to the first class.  Your pup must have his or her first two sets of shots including Bordetella (Kennel Cough Vaccine).  Check with your veterinarian to see if he or she recommends anything further for your pup.

Equipment Recommended and Cost:  Collar (buckle or snap), or harness. No choke collars.  6' leash that is easy to handle, toys your pup enjoys, treats or his supper, a hungry pup and a sense of humour.  The cost is $90.00.  Checks and cash can be accepted in the training hall.  Otherwise, please see our front staff during regular office hours to pay by VISA, Mastercard or Debit.

Attendance:  Although we recommend you make every effort to attend 6 consecutive classes, if you are unable to attend a class you are welcome to come to an additional class after your six week session.  Children are welcome to attend with you if they are old enough to participate in the training under your supervision.  An older child attending without your supervision, must be able to control the puppy.
